Featured Band: The Watais Group
The Watais drum group performs blessing songs from the Lakota tradition and Mandan, Apache, Blackfoot etc. They perform for free and donations where invited in the Santa Cruz area.
Unbroken Chain Internet Radio recently did a LIVE broadcast of a Watais Group performance at Peace Camp 2010. The performance took place the evening of Thursday - August 26, 2010 and the entire live show is available for download HERE.
In addition to re-broadcasting the above show, it is our hope at UCIR that we will be able to snag this amazing band for interviews and more live content as the month unfolds. Keeps your eye on the Program Schedule page of this site. Any comments to the group can be directed to the station.
The Watais Group has performed in some form for around 15 years at local places and indigenous ceremonies. Men and women participate. There is a huge buffalo skin drum on which the music is played with sticks. Included in the songs are Lakota, Apache, Arapaho, Ohlone, and Mandan languages. Many times people can come and sit with them at Monday night drumming held in the area. More information can be obtained at 831-476-4083. If you are in Santa Cruz, Ca you are welcome to drum, learn songs and ask about inipis, sundances, hembleychas and history of the Native cultures.
